    heat pumps

    (1) Each heat pump should have a flow switch, a wye strainer and a circut setter.
(2)Loop temp. should be between 75 to 78 degrees.
(3)Make sure you have some type of Boiler by-pass or primary secondary system to keep boiler temp. above 140 degrees. Bell&Gosset has a good piping diagram.
(4)Set flow rate at 3gpm per ton.
(5)Water treatment- Treat sump of tower(fluid cooler) with algaecide and scale inhibitor. (get a water teatment company).
(6)Control of loop temp. is accomplished by cycling tower spray pump, fans(reccomend a VFD). and the boiler. There is propably a new contol on the market as we speak. Try a company called HEAT TIMER.
(7)Check with the tower manufacturer for P/M.
(8)Keep the loop temp. at 75 and the air filters clean .

Can't stress water treatment and filtration enough

Especially if you are in an area with lots of new construstion, dust, (and an international airport nearby like I have!). According to one water treatment company here in the D.C. area, the most common foreign matter that winds up in towers in the downtown area the most is brake pad/shoe dust! Cooling towers are very efficient air scrubbers! A plate-type HX, mainstream/sidestream centrifugal separator will go a long way to prevent fouling. And, check with your water treatment co. about using a dispersant along with the rest of the chemical mix.

    closed loops

eliminate the filtration and treatment and wye strainers and flow meters etc....
annual maintenance should check the glycol % in a closed loop.

  • Can't wait!

We've got four systems in the pipeline. Two that incorporate radiant + A/C, one with radiant, A/C & solar (both PV and hydronic) & one that is strictly air.

Another exciting chapter in the book of mechanical contracting.

I'm planning on being a sponge during ME's presentation tonight.

    water source heat pump

Every water source (boiler/tower) heat pump job I have been involved with has been designed for 70° for winter and 90° in summer.
