Contact Thermometers for Subcool/Superheat

Professor: When I take a superheat and/or subcool measurement with my contact thermistor or my CPS clamp accessory, what effect if any does the oxide coating have on my reading?? I have been cleaning the contact point surface and then obtaining the temperature. I have never seen any info about this insulation factor or did I miss something in class or am I just thinking too much.....
