Brad,

I'm sure you would make the list. The list is longer then the names I mentioned. I just haven't known you for very long. You are very knowledgable and I have confidence in your abilities. I just haven't seen pictures or drawings of your work.

Don't worry I won't hold the fact that you are an engineer against you. :)

I read Dan's story about a hole in the ground........

I read Dan's story about where he got the term Deadmen. It is at http://www.heatinghelp.com/newsletter.cfm?Id=196.

I remember well over a decade ago before I became a radiant expert, I took one of Dan's class's on steam heating. Dan talked about the dead men who built these wonderful steam heating systems. They were great designers, very smart and knowledgeable. They were also great craftsmen since there work was a thing of beuty. I admired them greatly and wondered how they came up with all the great designs. I also felt bad that modern plumbers just didn't have the same quality of skill set, including me. My knowledge of steam to this day will never match those old timers. I still admire them greatly. I see there work in some very old houses. I see boilers and systems some designed over 100 years ago still running fine today. Who were those deadmen? I love those deadmen even though I never knew them.

10 years later, I see lots of quality designed radiant systems here on the wall designed by famous modern hero's. Like Siggy, NRT Rob, Heatboy, HotRod, Josh the youngster, Gary Wallace, Bob Gagnon, Andy Stack and many many others. The list is to long.

I wounder if 100 years from now people are going to look at there work in awe and wounder about the wallies. Who were all of those great deadmen!!

    Not Yet.

    Still got a pulse!

Guess I did not make your short-list, John. :)
  • I'm not dead yet

I'm not on ur list, John? I'm a third generation wethead while I left my cousins business, they got out of heating as its "too hard" for them. My grandfather the gravity system guy ( all hand threaded jobs), my father, forced flo heating ( electric threaded jobs) my self, battery operated jobs ;)

    The list......

    Ouch!!

I see the big problem here. The great designers of today that I didn't mention are going to feel left out. I blew it again. Now I opened myself up to a can of worms. Look I took all of ten seconds to come up with that list. It is not organized in order of importance or anything else. Those are the first names that just popped into my head. Kind of based on recent pictures or drawings of work I saw. I saw plenty of nice work here on the wall in the past. If I hadn't seen your work recently you didn't make my list. I can think of plenty of other great desgners even now that aren't on the list, many better then people on the list. I'm not going to modify the list or anything else like that. I would just make others feel bad by me not putting them on the list.

I wonder if the existing Dead Men are as "addicted" as we are? How about the Dead Engineers though? I am reminded of the great stories told about the engineers that designed the old power plant I went to steam school at. They were way ahead of their time.

You should see the old steam engines they used to pull a vaccuum on the turbines. On that basis my friend Brad should definatly be on the list. Just for shaping the way we all think about hydronics.

I'll tell you one list that I wish I was on. Richard Trethewy's.

    Modern Steam guys...........

A lot of modern steam guys here on the wall should be on the list.

What kind of a list does Richard Trethewy have? I wounder if I made his list?

See now there is a real list, If I'm not on it I'll be jelous.

I know Richard is a distributer of a few radiant products up in Mass. One of them being Rahau. I tried buying some stuff from them once but they don't handle my territory which is CT. Does the list have anything to do with his distributership?

Hydronic Heating Association.. You can't buy your way onto the list like RPA or any other association. From reading the requirements he basically has to know you and feel comfortable with you.

Since I live in the great northwest I don't think I'll be meeting him anytime soon. Wish I had a chance though! I think that we do what they are looking for!
