Cosmo I used to work with a guy that put one of these in his attic to heat his water. He loved it because it cooled his attic in the summer. One thing that is a hard sell though is the fact that it only does 15 gallons per hour.

    Does anyone know?

I have a call from a client, he said that he wants to take advantage of a federal program to upgrade how he heats his hot water. He is looking for a water heater that heats via Heatpump, with gas/electric backup.

You guys have any equipment recommendations? I can think of tankless, or a dual exchanger indirect tank.

    Suggestions please!

    a link

Found this- a heat pump for water heaters. Looks like it would used in conjunction with a standard water heater. It might be enough to maintain tank temp, then let the water heaters primary system (gas burner, or electric element) work when demand goes up.

Anybody play w/ one of these?

    Bump

Okay, I had a conversation with the client. It is not a program as he thought. he read an article from DOE on heatpumps for water heaters.

    Heres a link- www.eere.energy.gov/buildings/info/components/waterheating/heatpump.html

    Yeah I see that

Seems like it is meant more to maintain the temps, and handle very small hot water calls. But if you think of it, most water heater uses are low volume, washing hands, etc.

Do you know what model/brand he used. Maybe this is a way to get some DHW efficiency in houses that are heated w/ heatpumps, and/or furnaces. My area is pretty saturated with heatpumps, even though we see single digit winters......oh well.
