Here is a new one for the wall of shame. This fantastic boiler was installed in a $2.7 million dollar home. The homeowner called me in because his oil costs were through the roof.
It is aprox. 3600 square feet of RFH with a Bradford White indirect. They used telestats on the manifolds for zone control and a single 3 way mixing valve for the RFH.
I don't even know where to start on this one... First I hooked up my combustion analyzer and it pegged my CO sensor. Completly off the charts. I found out that the installer had not ever started up an oil boiler. The pressure was off by a whopping 40 PSI! I opened up the boiler and surely it was almost completely sooted up. I cleanen her out and tuned it up.
Second the RFH had no pump at all. All heat somehow made it through the house from the boilers primary pump. No mixing was taking place at all. Not to mention no differential pressure by-pass.
We are going to completly re-pipe the near boiler piping and retro-fitt some TN4 controls. I can't wait to see how much we are going to save our customer on fuel! I will post pics in a few weeks when we do the job.
What bothers me the most about this whole situation? The contactor has half page ads for RFH and if you look them up in the phone book in bold letters it says "Radiant Floor Heating Expert!"... Oh well. I'd rather have a great reputation than half page ads!

Josh,
any chance you could walk the job with a camcorder and post it to the Videos section? Could be a great teaching tool. Thanks.Retired and loving it.0 -

gas vs oil
If this is an oil boiler system what does it have to do with the owner's gas prices being high0 -
