WM Ultra heat exchanger plugs

The casting plugs are installed at the casting manufacturer and as far as I know there is no method for repair. This is a warranty item and if you contact your area WM representative they will arrange to replace the casting.

    WM Ultra heat exchanger plugs

The heat exchanger plugs on my Ultra 155 are leaking. Does WM have a repair kit and procedure for replacing the plugs? If yes than where can I find the procedure?
    Thanks, Tom

The original plugs were black and had a lot of leakage issues. Then they came out with a replacement kit; stainless steel plugs with a secondary o-ring seal. The front where hex head for allen key use to install. I installed the Ultra 105 last year in my house with the hex head ones, no leakage yet. I picked up a new Ultra 105 to install in my cousins house, looked the unit over and noticed they changed the design of the plugs again. They look like freeze plugs in a engine block. Contacted my area rep in NJ, he said they did change them again, made them simpler and no leakage. You need to contact your supplier or area rep to get the kit. Hope this helps.

    Had the same

Problem with a first generation ultra. Rep was real good in getting out to me. Before the retrofit plugs came out they had us using a lock tight sealer.

Also the ultra comes with a free five year extended warranty package but you must fill out the paper work and send it in.

The first generation Ultra had the threaded plug but it wasn't tapered. The leaks usually started between the ten o'clock and 2 o'clock position around the burner. There is a kit with replacement tapered threaded plugs. (See your rep.)

If this isn't a threaded plug then it is more like a freeze plug out of an automobile engine. This would be a warranty issue (again, see your rep)

Hope this helps. Also, let us know which style you have (threaded or non-threaded) and if it isn't threaded, what W-M says may have caused this issue.

They look like a threaded plug, black with an allen head. I was wondering if there is a torque spec for the stainless plug.

    Tom,
If it is a threaded plug, the plug isn't tapered and there is an issue with expansion/contraction (it isn't a matter of simply tightening)

Call your local W-M representative for the replacement plug kit.

    Ultra plugs

If you want to send me your info, my Weil rep was good enough to make sure I had a few sets here. I'd be glad to send you out one.

Thank you for your offer. I am going to let the company that installed it make the repair.

I like the freeze plug idea. That way if your boiler freezes for whatever reason hopefully the ice will puch out the plug instead of cracking the heat exchanger.
