We see this kind of junk all the time too. It's not limited to any area or any company. Hacks are everywhere that someone wants a low price and sometimes even that doesn't have anything to do with it.

death trap
As a lurking homeowner on this site am always interested in learning something new. So can someone tell me what makes this boiler a death trap? I see some rusty pipe connections an expansion tank that doesn't look very healthy? Is the death trap the way the vent pipe is configured? The vent looks configured somewhat like my old boiler.
Just saw the third photo of that nasty piping job, what a menagerie! This reminds me of that episode where the Three Stooges become plumbers and Larry is in the basement and pipes himself into a cage.
Thanks

Trap
Yes the flue pipe is the problem. The boiler is a fan assisted draft model and someone has put a draft hood on it. The draft hood lets the products of combustion out of the vent connector and in to the room. The draft hood is the cone shaped piece on the flue pipe. Draft hoods are normal on atmospheric equipment.

I just love people that run pipe at all sorts of weird angles. I'm sure we have all done it at some point to save an elbow or a few feet of pipe.
Maybe in a crawl space, but around the boiler it make everything look bad.

Now now,
You're stomping all over on the artistic bent of this one installer. Cartesian rules were meant to be broken - yeah sure! and Euclidian geometry was meant for the birds.
Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, all these modernistic boilerisms have me scratching my head. Were the pictures posted upside down? I didn't notice... oh. This is one museum I'd get kicked out of too.0 -
Ah yes, I also like the patina he obviously went to so much trouble for.

My biggest concern would be..i
the cover off the flow switch!! This should always be investigated. I'll bet it has been adjusted or jumpered
Or tweaked and rendered usless from day one due to mis understood flow rate issues.

Not for nothing, but how about the boiler drain pointing in your face when an unsuspecting H.O. opens it. One would think it could have been pointed down.0
