Wall hung H.W.Heater
This will show how much training and keeping up with the times I require. I need information on a wall hung italian made heater. Brand name:F.A.I.S S.p.a wall mount, direct vent Model:AR 820 s/n:1245 min, relief cap:108 lbs/hr 1983 L.P.boiler. It also had on the inside cover: Via Garofoli 240 37057 S.Giovanni Lupatoto (VR)Italy. It sits in a closet used in an apartment for hydronic heating but is also connected to a Phase III, type: Heat Line tank for domestic hot water. There is a Erie 3 way zone valve connected that I'm concluding switches from heat to domestic hot water. I get some play on the manual handle of the valve, I do not think it is closing all the way. The owner has to turn on the heat via thermostat to produce hot shower water. I noticed a sensor type apparatus on top of the phase III tank which I think is what should tell the heater to come on to heat water for shower? How do I check that? Also it has a knob on top that says 'comfort level'? It sounds kind of scratchy, should there be a clicking sound like a switch? I'm thinking this unit may be obsolete, but it works well for heating, fan good, grundfos circulator comes in when thermostat is raised or when I manually open the 3 way valve and the end switch makes, however the valve does not move back and forth as smooth as I think it is supposed to, pauses between open and close. Heater has beenin operation for 15 years. Found expansion tank water-logged which explained the PRV discharging regularly. Had a problem filling the unit due to old air vent and a Watts brand pressure reducing valve that did not seem to want to fill the heater until I moved the adjustment screw up and down and tapped on it a few times, about ten years old, should It be changed? Owner wants to keep it going but correct the shower hot water problem. I know the circuit boards on this model is probably also extinct. Any help from the pros of "The Wall" will be greatly appreciated! I can also be reached at 'maddoctorq@aol.com'.0 -
This may not...
... be what you want to hear, but if you cannot find a source of repair parts, it's time to replace the heater. A number of brands have come and gone over the years. I Googled the heater with no luck... Would it make a nice sculpture? :~)

I installed....
a handfull of these and even more of the indirects 10+ yrs ago here in NH....they were ok ..the indirects were 26 gallon and could crank out a lot of hot water and were very inexpensive. The problem came w/ the aquastat...it was similar to the old amtrol exposed bulb that they used. I it would not work after 5 yrs, and you could replace it w/ the old style amtrol...it took a bit of finagling. kpc
