Keep a Grainger catalogue in your truck...has many of those formulas in the back...great reference tool

    Belt size

Any one know the formula for finding the right size drive belt. Also any links to any HVAC, mechanical equations/formulas etc would be appreciated

    Down and dirty

    Here you go:

1 - Measure the center-to-center distance between the drive and driven shafts

    2 - Mulitply the result in "1" by 2

3 - Measure the effective diameter of the drive and drvien pulleys (By effective I mean the diameter of the smallest pully that can be used to accomodate the belt at its present position in the pulley)

4 - Plug the pulley diameters into the following:

    3.14 x (D1 + D2) / 2

5- Add the result from #4 to the result from step #2. This will give the approximate belt length you will need.

The further the shafts are from each other, the more accurate this estimate will be.

    OR....

The way I was taught "back in the day"...Take a piece of clothesline and string it around the pully's, with the motor adjusted somewhere near the lower end of the adjustment. Measure the lenth and VIOLA !

The math is easy but this hasn't failed me yet.(Sometimes it's quicker too!).

Sorry Eugene, Some things are just simpler than MATH!) Chris

    Thank

you, I have it somewhere but when I needed it the most I could not find it. So now I am trying to put together all the formulas and equations I can find for my laptop so they will be there when needed.

    No need to be Sorry

I've been known to "string it" every now and then!

    pulley dia

Measure the effective pulley dia times 1.57, do this for both pulleys, then measure the shaft center to center distance times 2. Add the 3 numbers together to arrive at belt length.

We used this many times in the farm equipment business.

Great--now we need a conversion chart from belts to suspenders...
