    Opinions greatly appretiated

    Recently turned installation business over to my son and went to work for a supply house (Heating and AC only) in outside sales and engineering. What time of day do you not mind a salesman showing up at your shop to show his wares? I have been doing this for almost two months now and there are so many outside salesman calling on P&H guys that I do not want to be just another stuffed shirt at the door. What do you want to see, if anything from an outside sales person. Thanks in advance for any info.

    That's easy....

    Call and ASK THEM.

    If they're open to meeting with you before the crew arrives...be prepared, cause your time is limited to THAT time.

    My best suppliers show early, and make out well because the time is available then. 1 hour later and it's a crap shoot with all the things that need to be done. JMHO. Chris

    Unexpected salesmen - even ones you know well - showing up unannounced can be tantamount to your buddy or worse yet family...showing up when you are "brawling" with the wife. You should ask the boss what a "safe" time is. Mad Dog

    I work for

    a good size Plumbing firm and the sales people that do the best are those that are consistant. They make it the same day and around the same time every week.

    When they are not going to be in they call and see if there is anything they can do.

    sales calls

    I was in the field most of the time, and I did not like to deal with anyone when trying to get out and on the road first thing in the morning, so mid morning break time or lunch was better for me, less hectic.

    Salesmen

    I work at a supply house. I never show up unannounced. ALWAYS call a few days in advance, agree on a time, and never show up late. Don't make the appointment unless you have something useful to say/show. ALWAYS be honest/true to your word.

    a trick so you are always on time

    Tell them you will be there between 1/4 of 11 and 11. That 15 minute window will allow for traffic etc. If you are going to be late, call or reschedule. Their time is as important as yours. In the age of cell phones, there is no excuse for not calling. I hate to be kept waiting or stood up. It is disrespectful and shows no regard for my time.

    If you made the appt. a week before or so, confirm the day before or so. It will allow you to have more solid appts.
    There is nothing like a busted appt. to start the day.

    Come prepared and always leave something behind for them to look at later. Sales are logical and there are certain steps that should always be followed. The unexpected will take care of itself. But, you should always be prepared for the expected.

    Always call and make an appointment. When salesmen show up without an appointment they are turned away at the door and asked to make an appointment.

    Hi Ron
    There never is a good time for me to sit down with a sales rep. The days almost always seem to be filled.

    BUT.. A good sales rep is worth his weight in gold.
    An examples..
    One supplier we deal with for the lions share of our material needs.
    The rep some might know him Omar Spooner
    is in this area twice a week. If I need him we will set a time to meet. If I need material I either call it in or leave a list with my ( The real boss ) wife. Today he threw a 500 foot coil of poly on his truck with needed fittings for me to install a tempoary water line.

    Great rep with good service

    A bad experience....
    An unknown rep stopped us in front of the post office. He handed me a flier for faucets and said they were just like Delta but much cheaper. When I told him we did not sell or install Delta he looked at me like I was a nut.
    Needless to day. He never got an order as I tossed his card.

    I think what I am trying to. Build a realtion ship that is based on service.
    Please do not get to upset when someone is short on time and cuts you short.

    Wall to the rescue

    Thanks Guys,
    This feedback is priceless, I had to do a lot of driving around to find potential new accounts because for the first two years this supply house was in business their outside sales guy did nothing, then when the supply house was going down the tubes, a new owner took over (4 months ago) and is turning things around, now that I have scoped out what is out there I am going to start making appointments instead of just driving blind and showing up at random. Thanks

    Salesman??

    You may think it just simantics but my business card says ESTIMATOR. I chose that because SALESMAN seemed to place a wall between prospective customers. to estimate seems less threatning and more helpfull.

    I agree with consistant timing get them used to seeing you you're intuition will tell you when time is short.

    What I need from a sales rep is information. Give me someone knowlegable about their product line. Have the forsight to research the type of projects/ services that we perform and explain how they can be a resourse to improving our business.

    Follow thru with a committment. Remember we made a committment based upon your committment. Nothing sours a potential deal quicker than a customer who has no faith in your ability to get things done.

    Inform me on what is new and inovative.

    Hold seminars by manufactorurs reps that actually teach something.

    Most of all be honest and be yourself.

    After lunch is the best time for me to spend a few minutes with a salesman.
