Flowcheck location

Hi,
If the boiler is cold start, it is better to have the flow checks close to the indirect to reduce single pipe convection from causing too much radiation from the piping during the off cycle of the boiler. I like to use a circ with a built in check valve mounted close to the indirect on the boiler supply (pumping away from the expansion tank of course) and I use a B&G Hydrotrol in the return to the boiler also close to the indirect.

Flowcheck location
Does it matter where in the loop the flowcheck is located?
This is for an indirect water heater I am using a 007 pump.

flow check location
Not really, John. I've installed them right after the circ on the sullply side and on the return side with no problems either way. I always try to position every system component in such a way as to make it easy to reach and service.

Flow Check Location
If at all possible, locate flow checks on the discharge side of the circulator and with distances from the outlet as the manufacturer recommends. If there are too many restrictions (pressure drop) on the inlet side of any pump or circulator, cavitation can result especially at higher temperatures and lower system pressures. Not an absolute but the ideal approach.0 -
flo check
Install a taco 007-IFC circulator and you have a built in check. Saves time and money.

Hi Al,
Never had a pump mounted chech fail (Grundfoss or Taco) yet but I have had several weighted flow checks fail or get something stuck in them.

failures
Yes I have had two failures so far but I have been using the IFCs since they came out.

yes on taco
I had a few call backs on ifc but they where the earlier version with the checks on the suction side of the pump but now i hear that thye have moved it to the discharge side and no promblems as of yet ,i have installed alot of taco ifc withonly 2 promblems out of say 50 or 60 pumps but sorry to say i have mostly switched to the 3 speed grunfos with the checks in the outlet they do work excellent .I also believe in 2 flow checks on a indirect espically if it is a clod start boiler .peace and good luck clammyR.A. What can, and is happening with intergral check circs
is air can collect in the volutes and cavitate the pump. Sometimes over periods of no use the air will rise up to these checks. Since the check is now so close to the pump volute a little air goes a long ways
I'm thinking a small pin hole in the check may be a "pump saver" Enough hole to allow some air to pass but not those pesky "ghosts" of flow.

I've had two, one Taco and one Grundfos. As soon as the pump cooled down, I removed the checks, cleaned them reinstalled and no more problems.
