to take legal action against that excavator. He makes the entire industry look bad.

And not a drop to drink
I am sitting in my office in my boots with about 2" of water covering the entire office floor. 3 Sump pumps working away full time and two wet vacs going full tilt.
Weather forecast for New England more rain!!!
I am going up to the top of the mountain in Maine and forget about it.
See Ya Monday.0 -
Enjoy Tim !
2" ain't gonna wash the house away. It'll be there when you get back, just shut things down safely and have at it.
Unfortunately I know the feeling all too well in the last few weeks. The river next door to me got as high as I have ever seen it. The bridge next to me has been shut down indefinately and traffic is a nightmare with 3 others in the town also being closed.
Life is short. These things happen and it still moves forward.
Here's a shot from Mother's Day. the lawn is 11' over the normal waterline of the river and the bridge arches are 8-10' above the water most of the time. Chris0 -
Tim
is going to the mountain ..... sounds right.
You'll dry out Tim. Who knows web feet may be IN this summer.
My mothers house had four pumps going.

You guys
You're getting the "little" deluge we had here on Wednesday night-early Thursday AM. Just north of me about 25 miles, the NWS measured 4.5" of rain in a tad over an hour. Luckily the geology of that area is pure sand and a good share of it soaked in. There are lot's of farmers around here though that have sizeable amounts of corn and hay sitting under water. Now they are predicting frost for tonight and tomorrow night. Gotta admit that without weather, our topics of conversation would be a little more limited.
Hope all goes well Timmie!0 -
RIGHT !!
Whats a Cubit ?

You're getting our rain!
We haven't had any real rain since about a week before Memorial Day and we're starting to hurt. The governments are talking about watering restrictions big time.
Send some South, PLEASE. Just keep the floods.0 -

Thats nothing. I had 5' in my basement a couple of weeks ago, 4' in the street. The entire neighborhood was evacuated for 5 days, no gas or electric for 5 days, some neighbors not back in yet. Bob Gagnon

That one
Will miss us, far to the South. According to the Web (Weather.com and the NWS), our best chance is a week from this Monday.
If we (as heat pros) we as wrong as weather people, lotsa people wouldn't be here on this side of the lawn.0 -
While Noah was gathering his flock in the streets...
... we were busy in the basement and at the utility pole. It appears that the Electricians never applied DuctSeal to the underground feed into the house....
... so the sauce runs down the pole....
... into a conduit ...
... into a electrical distribution box ...
... into another conduit ...
... before completing its world tour via the conduit cleanout in our basement.
4 cans of ductseal and 6 gallons of water later, we had the source blocked, the conduit to the house blocked, and a week with floor heat before the basement area around the electrical panel was dry again. Gotta love RFH!
Were we to have 4' of water in the street, it would be lapping at our foundation and 95% of Cambridge would be under water. Scary thought!0 -
Bad luck
Not a fun way to spend an afternoon is it?
We just completed a work in a new home that will fill with water if the power ever goes out for an extended period. They have one battery back-up sump, but even in dry weather the sump runs every few minutes or so. I can only imagine what will happen if the power drops out for several days like it did earlier this year.
The original excavator ran the 3" under-ground conduit for the electrical service to the house. (Approx. 800' from the pole)After he buried it, he had to run the water service and lines for the sewage ejection system. Well. he hit the conduit. Tore the wires from the pole! He dug it back up and "fixed it".........
First warm (45*) day and water is pouring out of the meter box on the side of the house! The service was under water as evidenced by the block of ice that still had the form of the service wires.
The electrician drill a 3/8" hole in the conduit just below the meter box so now whenever it rains, it looks like the meter box is urinating. HO's don't want to pay to dig up and repair the conduit and the original excavator is LOOOOONG gone.

forgot....*~/:)
oops
Thanks. something occurred to me while reading your post and i am certain that you may have just helped me get some of the dust off my amazing all seeing eye. misplaced it earlier this year, and am currently operating on a need to know basis. It is extremely difficult to know all the minor technicalities in each and every corner of a job....to me if you are hired to work that means that you take the time to mention these details as a simple courtesy... not that we do not have enough to do already

The General Contractors responsibilty to make it right!! It is his/ her job to get the original excavator back or in their stead a new one.

Back from the Mountain Top
in Bridgton, Maine, it rained all weekend until today Sunday when we had to leave. It was not a total waste as the central air conditioning is now installed and all the finishing touchs on the house are coming to a conclusion. On a clear day when we look out of the northern exposure (all glass) we can see Mt Washington and to the left is Shawnee Peak ski resort. Time spent with my son and my grandson was great and I forgot all about the water back home.
Back now and it has pretty much dried up. Now we have a tropical storm coming Oh well! after 66 years here on planet earth nothing really bothers me much anymore. My Jesus tends to give that peace which passes all understanding.
My prayers for Bob Gagnon and folks in his area I wish them all well.0 -
thanks Tim,
I didn't lose too much. Luckily I built my house high enough so just the basement got it. Some of my neighbors have to remodel their entire first floors- they could use your prayers. Bob Gagnon

I am glad to hear that
Bob, and I will certainly pray for your neighbors.0 -
Ouch!
I can't imagine allowing a situation like that to fester like that. Long term, this cannot be healthy for the home or electrical service either.
Coming back to our house, the first underground loop (from pole to junction box) is still under water. I am reluctant to go in there to suck all out all the water because I fear I might nick the insulation, on the other hand I don't like the thought of electrical wires being suspended in water... I guess I'll let sleeping dogs lie, and live another day.
At least the rest of the conduit is dry.
As for Bob, Tim, and his neighbors, I hope that there is no permanent damage and that you were able to get most of your posessions out of the way of the water. I put Rub-R-Wall on the outside of my foundation to keep the creeping water out, but things would get pretty hopeless were the house to stand in the stuff.0
