And don't use that red rubber give-away gasket with steam. Get a nice spiral-wound grafoil gasket instead. And as Al said, Never Seize. Think of the next guy.

Type of pipe union
What type of union is best for a steam main, ground union or bolt up? 3" pipe, 2psi, one pipe system.0 -

Either will work fine. By bolt-up I assume you mean a set of flanges. Flanges use gaskets where a union doesn't, so that could be a consideration. Either works well for maintenance or if there is a need to disconnect. Helpful hint...on steam, use never-seize on bolts, gaskets and threads, makes take apart a whole lot easier.
