eledtric motor runs backwards

We had this problem with condenser fans on roof top air conditioners. If the wind was spinning the fan the wrong way it would run the wrong way when powered up.
As mentioned by MR. Lockard a new capacitor might fix it. We had to go one size larger than the recomended capacitor to solve the problem. Maybe not the recomended fix butit was that or change the motors so there was nothing to loose.

Electric motor runs backwards
I don't know if this is strictly a control question, but why does my motor run backwards?
We had an old clock that would run backwards every other time you plugged it in.
Today a coworker said he had a pump running backwards. I told him to turn it off, then turn it back on(on the radio). Everyone thought I was mad. I'll find out tomorrow if it worked. I would like to know why it may have worked. Do you know?
Thanks,

Thoughts
Especially shaded pole motors will spin in reverse if the motor is moving backwards at the time of being energised. It will spin backwards due to reverse draft being created.
