Do you have the latest version of Adobe Reader? the feature it uses is pretty new.

How to build a grill cover for a Veismann wall radiator
Hi-I am a Designer from NY, and I have a client that wants a grill cover to be designed to cover her Runtal wall panel Radiator. What specifics should I know about. Also can they be painted without changing the efficiency of the unit?
Thanks- Kathleen0 -
Arrrrrghhh!

I am ok now...
Have to ask, why would one want to? I mean, the radiators are designed to be exposed. Aesthetics aside, that is how they work technically, to radiate. Unless of a convective type (with fins) you will drastically counter their best feature, that of radiant heat. There are many styles of course. But in general what I say holds true.
Yes, they certainly can be painted with any good oil-based paint. Scuff the factory finish and use a gloss enamel. I like the Shreuder brand from Holland myself. Good finish, not inexpensive but a nice deep gloss. Avoid metallic finishes regardless.
Anyway, if your client is bent on covering the radiator, someone should know the heat loss of the space and output of the radiator. This ratio is essential to knowing at what temperature the room can be maintained on a design cold day. Replacing the radiator, perhaps with a cast iron type with more convective and predictable properties, might be a consideration.

p.s. How does Viessmann fit into the mix here? Do I gather it is a low temperature HW system? All the more reason to be careful when covering the radiator.

Radiators
The two things that all designers and customers want never to be seen, are speekers and radiators. Unfortunatally the ones that are big and obvious work the best. Try a faux finish?? Cool looking mother of pearl or marblized? If you can't hide it paint it red!0 -
They DO make some Runtals with fins (in the back), and in that case there is a good bit of convective output, but any cover will cut off some radiative output and so sharply reduce the total heat given off. A grill that is as open as possible is the least disruptive, but in any case it turns a panel rad, meant to be thin and unobtrusive, into something thicker and more obtrusive.
The Runtals in our house are exactly the same color as the walls, and they are only 1" away from the walls, which is how they are supposed to be installed. People rarely notice them. Panel rads should be selected based on an awareness of how they will look in place; covering them after installation is not so smart. But paint is OK if you follow the instructions in the other post.0 -
If you're covering it anyway
I wouldn't use Runtals. Use one of the less expensive brands, like VEHA. They sell them direct at an excellent price. Have you considered radiant walls? Radiant Engineering's Thermofin-U makes a nice radiant wall with pex-al-pex. I don't think any of the bigger companies have picked up on the u-fin method yet so you'll probably have to buy direct from them too. If the radiant wall must be located on an exterior wall, be sure to provide a thermal break between the siding and the fin.

radwall.pdf
Andrew, The radwall pdf is blank when I open it. Is it my computer or are others having the same problem?0 -
Could be your browser
My Mozilla requires me (for some reason) to right click and "save target as", whereupon it downloads and I can open it. As you said, when you just click on it you get a blank page and a "done" message.
Try that.0 -
Thanks
Thanks Andrew & Brad, I wasn't sure if it was my computer or not. I downloaded the newest version of adobe but I can't get it to install.
