    missing refrigerant

Has anyone had any trouble with refrigerant coming up missing from units in the field? I mean not from leaks. We have a unit that is down 2 pounds each week. There is NO leak.
One of my customers is a Deputy Sherrif. He told us that they are getting complaints of units and autos with no refrigerant. He said the meth makers are stealing refrigerant from units to use in there crack. I was wondering if anyone else is having a problem. Is there a device out there to lock down valves.

This truly the most interesting thing that I have encountered today, Crack from R-22 sounds like trouble to me!

    novent

Then when the crackheads use vise grips to pull them off you get messed up threads on the valve. novent is the name of the ones sold by the people who make eztrap and there is another one copcaps or something same deal will slow someone down but not too tough to get around.

    The lengths

people will go to to destroy themselves.

If they worked half as hard at an honest living they'd have a better life.

The meth cookers use baby formula as well. Found this out when my wife tried to buy bulk after my daughter was born. No deal. Prohibited thanks to your local ICE cooker.

    Yep

Even out here in the sticks we have that problem. Don't know about meth cookers stealing it but what I have run into is kids huffing the stuff to get some kind of a buzz. Basically deprives their noggin of O2 until they nearly pass out giving them some sort of a thrill. I have one unit by a party store in a small city near here that needed over 20# of replacement 22 last summer. The owner put a fence around it and we haven't had any more "leaks".

Now I think I have heard it all.

When I read the first post I thought this was a joke.

This is another good arguement for R-410a, " well Mrs Jones..........it saves the enviroment and crack heads".

Like Cosmo says " I dont want to know whats next."

BRONZE: EZ Trap Inc. Novent Locking Refrigerant Caps can be quickly installed and removed in seconds by an authorized person with a special key.
EZ Trap Inc. captured the third place award with its Novent (Model NG-R22, NG-R410A) locking refrigerant cap (www.noventcaps.com). It was developed by industry professionals after witnessing countless cases of theft by teenagers for the purpose of inhaling refrigerants, also known as huffing, which can result in brain damage or even death. Novent helps to solve this problem. According to EZ Trap Inc. president Gerry Spanger, Novent provides a tamper-resistant lock for all refrigerant tanks and service ports, including recovery tanks and refrigerant cylinders. Spanger said, “The locks can only be removed with a special key that is only available through HVAC distributors for authorized personnel.”

Novent caps are applied to refrigerant service valves after installation or servicing by simply screwing them on to the valve thread and tightening them with the key, providing a gas-tight secondary seal and preventing unauthorized access.

One judge commented, “This is an outstanding product that protects people from huffing. It can also be used by contractors to keep other contractors from servicing units that are under service agreements. It is very easy to use, and the color-coded caps make it easy to distinguish between refrigerants being used on various systems.”
