Crown is a fine boiler company but being you are and do have radiant i would say go with buderus there equipment is very good well insulated a total breeze to clean ,they also make there own line of controls for radiant and panel rads that are designed to work with there boiler and are easly connected .Buderus boilers are a little bit more tolerant of low return water temps then most american boilers .I have been installing buderus for over 8 years or so without any promblems they make a very good quality heating system with small featrures that most american boiler co don,t even think about it would be my choice if in your shoes .Peace and good luck clammy here's a pic of one

Home Boiler Heating Questions??? So many questions????

    Where to start?
I am in the process of building a new home and I am trying to decide upon a boiler to go with my heating system. I live in Massachusetts. I have radiant heating throughout the whole house. The house is 3000 sq ft.
I am going with oil heating but I don't have a chimney so I need to do Direct Vent. What is the difference between direct vent and power vent?
I have had a couple of different boilers suggested to me. One company is Buderus. The other company is th Tobago boiler from Crown. Does anyone know anything about these boilers with radiant heating?

    Any suggestions for my application?

    Power venting

uses a separate fan to mechanically provide draft.Direct vent uses only the burner fan. Buderus is a fine boiler,I have no experience with Crown. The ultimate oil boiler for low temp applications is the Viessmann Vitola, probably the ultimate for any application

    Direct Vent

Does direct venting need high temperature flues? Am I able to go directly out the side of the house with direct venting?

    Crown Tobago

Anyone have any experience with the Crown Tobago boiler? My plumber is recommending this one and I would just like to hear some first hand stories.
  • Differences

Direct Vent boilers utilize two pipe connections to the outside. One is for flue gasses and the other is for combustion air. In other words, direct vent appliances get their air for combustion via direct connection to the outdoors.

Power vented boilers only have one pipe connection to the outside and this is for the flue gasses. These types of boilers will get their air for combustion from the space where they are installed and provisions will need to be made to ensure that there is enough combustion air. Both Direct vented and Power Vented boilers only consist of one fan and not two.

Burnham manufactures numerous Direct Vent and Power Vent boilers in both Gas and Oil. If you are interested in a high efficiency oil fired boiler that can handle the rigors of cool return water that radiant systems are likely to have, try the Burnham MPO boiler. Hope this helps.

Start a separate thread asking about the Crown Tobago. You'll be more likely to get responses. I have a tobago in my house. It's less than a year old, and the tech did not pipe it per Crown's specs, but it still works quite well. I would also like to hear some of the pros comment on this boiler.

    It's

a cast-iron pin type boiler similar to V-8 Burnham,Peerless,Weil etc.I'd go with a 3 pass boiler over any pin-type.Buderus,Viessmann,Biasi etc.

    Not necessarily

There are concentric direct vent systems that work fine with one termination hood. Improvements in design have eliminated recirculation. Of course, with either, "location, location, location" is critical.

And, doesn't everybody manufacture a "power vent boiler" these days(oil of course).

    Three choices

Viessmann Vitola..$$$ worth every penny...Buderus G series...excellent product and support...Third would be Burnhams MPO series..Still new to the market..We've put one in, and it is nice. American made too. I would put any of these in my own house.

    Hope this helps.

PS. MAKE sure your plumbing company is top shelf, or you will have problems. Check references etc...
