Its Lisa...back with a couple of questions for the intelligent group of steam professionals that frequent this board and a thank you for the great t shirt. I love it and wear it to work out at the gym.

So.....The connected load of my heating system is 364 sq. ft of steam.

The gentleman (who has impressed me with his seeming wealth of knowledge)has recommended a Weil-McLain model SG 4 with 354 sq ft of steam. He tells me that with the manufacturers built in 1.3 pick up factor for the pipes in the basement that should be more than sufficient to heat the numerous radiators in 14 room/three story house. He will also be adding a super stor ssu 45 water storage tank to the system which he says will not add anything to the load on the boiler.

I have never had heat in the three bedrooms on the third floor and I would really like to have this possible since I am trying to make this system work for as long as I am going to live (and likely die) in this house.

The other estimate I would consider recommended the Well McLain Model SGO-5 boiler with a tankless coil with no storage tank for the hot water. I think I would really prefer the storage tank. I hate to run out of hot water!

The explanation I got about no heat on the third floor with no heat was that if a boiler was oversized it would cause this problem.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Its a rather big investment. Thanks so much. I look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your help!

    The SGO-4

is actually rated 450 square feet of steam radiation. The one rated 354 square feet is the SGO-3. The SGO-5 is 546 square feet, which according to your figures would be too much for your house.

My experience with the SGO series tells me they are rated rather conservatively. We installed an SGO-9 on a Kriebel Vapor system last year, sized to the radiation, and ended up down-firing it because the system heated so fast it short-cycled on the Vaporstat.

Based on this I believe the SGO-3 should be fine. If you're wary, get the SGO-4 and down-fire it to match the load.

How about a pic of you in the Save the Radiators t-shirt? ;-)
