indirect vs. indirect

How many gpm is the tub filling at? You need more hw storage to offset the big "dump" of hot water. By putting on a Taco 5000 or like thermostatic mixing valve and running the tank at 140' or 150' you should have no problem with filling the tub. It will also eliminate any threat of legionella growth. You definitely have enough boiler for a smart 40 tank. TT is looking for 112,000 outbut btu's to power that tank. I do not have any info in front of me but the pump head on a WGO and a phase III are very low so the 007 should be okay.

Hope all is well, Darin

    tank-in-tank or coil

    Which one due you perfer?
I think the internal coils have better heat transfer from boiler and recovery.
I added my first TT Phase III 37 gal indirect after removing two 30 gal water heaters.
And now I get a call that tub does not fill up hot. I checked again, and yep I cant get this 5'x32"x20" deep tub to fill more than 1/3 before stream turns cold. I checked, the first hour rating of 152gals should be able to fill that tub.
I am going to cut in a new scald valve and raise the aquastat. But I never had a problem yet with coil type indirects, I've done 40 gal indirect on a two person jacuzzi no complaints of ever running out.
The good thing about tank-in-tank is standby loss may be less.
Full size piping, no other zones calling ... ??

What do you have driving your indirect? It takes the right number of BTU's to hit the ratings of the indirect. Your problem may well be that the boiler is not large enough to keep up. Certainly a Sparco will extend your hot water and probably solve your bath tub. I have had zero problems with the Phase III's.

Ken's right, I've installed alot of phase III's w/ no problems even filling large jacuzzis. The indirect is typically the largest load on most boilers these days. I usually go w/ a 4 section Buderus to power one. Are you using 1" supply and return piping? Some folks upsize to a taco 010 circ for more flow as well. Try calling Triangle Tube and see what they say. Good Luck

    A couple of things...

The GV boiler can take a bit to cycle through to start... if it isn't firing up on the first try you a really finished....

Also, the Gv if it is a later model, will have two pumps and will recycle the water back to it's self to get the return temp to 140 before it will supply water to the indirect, that could take a minute or two..... again your SOL

check that both pumps are working... have had one quit and it will still heat but at a reduced rate.... is the boiler cycling on high limit???

Is the indirect on priority??? have had people that get up in the morning, crank the t-stat and then try to draw hot water and the house sucks the heat back out of the tank....probably not your problem here, but a thought....

My gut feeling is that it is the delay in the firing and circulation from the GV.... have run into that problem myself a coil does fix that...higher indirect temp. will, it give you more time....

air vent on top of tank?

make sure you have the tank purged properly, no air trapped at the top.

That tank should perform as well usually better, than a coil style. It has to do with the surface area of the HX, among other things :)

    hot rod

What temperature do you have the tank set for? Have you checked the hot water temperature with a thermometer to be sure the aquastat is accurate? What temperature is the boiler and what is it's capacity? Make sure that the cold water inlet and hot water outlet aren't swapped. Make sure that the dip tube is intact. The tank in tank has a better recovery rate than most coil in tank indirects.

Otherwise, the antiscald valve and bumping up the temperature is probably your easiest solution.
