Single pipe steam

On the boiler side of things, Dante, steam generally is self-limiting to the low to mid 80's percentile. No condensing by definition, you are leaving the boiler with steam at 212F plus and nothing can be done about that.
That said, steam is a wonderful way to heat! Get your system to it's own personal best by venting correctly, insulating the piping, adding TRV vent valves to strategic radiators, cranking down the pressure using a vapor stat (ounces not pounds of pressure) etc. etc.....
What you have now can be made even better.

Single Pipe Steam system
I have a single pipe radiator steam heating system that is 30 year old. Is there a steam boiler system on the market that will save substantially on gas?0 -
Brad is right
but, what make and model boiler do you have now? 30 years ago some were better than others.
Also, measure the length and diameter of your steam mains and tell us what vents are installed at or near the end of each one. We can tell you if you need to upgrade.

efficient steam
The most efficient boiler burner combo I've used is the Weil Mclain SGO boiler with a Riello power flame gas burner. It's a great combination, is quiet, and offers the possibility of converting the boiler to oil in the future, if desireable, by changing the burner.
Here in the Northeast, that can be a factor. I have one unit that we've changed from oil, to gas and back to oil.
You certainly want to make sure the system itself is up to snuff as mentioned in another post. Vents are the key.

Would taking a digital photo help?0 -
