Absolutely Unbelievable,..or is it?
Thanks for this lead. It's guys like this that give me a GREAT NAME. What I saw was an out right SCAM!!!! I really liked watching him nervously pace why trying to explain his reasoning for the problem and his recommendation.
Mike T.
P.S. I would love to have been the one who busted this guy! This is a must see for all Wall people. Especially the customers.0 -
Sad
Unfortunately, these types of situations occur way more often than it should. It shouldn't happen at all. People like that can prey on the elderly with even greater ease. It seems to be really rampant when it comes to HVAC because lets face it, it is the most mechanically complicated system in any house. Most dont understand it. Kind of like how most people dont understand their car. We see these types of scams in the automotive repair business too. It's easy to pull a scam when youre working with complex systems.
As a homeowner, thats sort of what is on your mind all the time when collecting estimates or when your about to enter into contract regarding some sort of home improvement. You're never really sure if you have the right contractor with the right equipment. And effects of those errors are long lasting. There are only limited qualifications too. A contractor could be licensed but it isnt any guarantee. Also, OUTFITS that are licensed dont neccessarily send TECHNICIANS that are. The license is held by the OUTFIT or its owner, not the person doing the work.
There are too many contractors out there who don't know their own line of work well enough or take enough pride in their work. They all too often are looking for quick, easy money. As a homeowner you must do your research. And that in itself is work.
There are too many who 'fall' into their line of work, and thats ok. The problem here is that they tend to never learn and educate themselves as much as possible about about a particular trade. They take no pride in their work and dont take what they do seriously. Mistakes are one thing, we all make them and you fix the honest errors. That is an example of the right attitude. Know as much as possible and correct the honest errors. Can't ask for more, right? But the wrong attitude is another. That is what is being exposed in this news piece.
I wish all contractors were as knowledgable and enthusiastic about their trade as many are on this site. But that's just not reality.
Sorry if I went on too long about this topic ). But its something that is frustrating to me. I and others I know have gotten burned on things like this before. I have the utmost admiration for highly skilled and knowledgable trademen or technicians. Their value is untold. But guys with the worng attitude, no pride and no drive to educate and improve need to find other lines of work.0 -
Clip not available
Sorry I missed it.0 -
Washington, DC eh?
Brings back a few memories.... of a company which I believe was called Warner that was doing the exact same thing. They got caught the same way and were shut down. It might be interesting to see if any of the principals of that company are involved with this one.
I've run into a few others who did that, they always make my blood pressure go up. This kind of thing makes us all look bad.
BTW, when playing this video it will tell you you need Internet Explorer 6, even if you already have it or a later version installed. It won't work with Netscape.... typical Microsoft behavior.

This behavior is rampant
I see it all the time. I've been in business 19 years and have not had to advrtise for the last 17 because I have earned a reputation of total honesty. Work of mouth spreads like wildfire. It did my heart good to see Warner busted back when. I've seen the contractor involved's trucks around and will never forget this clip now when I see them.

Wayne, you might want
to drop a dime (OK, it's 50 cents now) if you see more than one of their trucks at a job site. I'm sure their exorbitantly fraudulent profits aren't going to WSSC as permit fees......

The press (rightfully so) loves to expose the scam artists. The guy that tried to con the consumer was busted and reveiled. GREAT!!! This is actually a benefit for those of us that are doing our best to make an honest living and give the consumer a fair deal. But where is the ATTABOY for the technician and his employer for being so completly honest. Fair is fair, if they were going to expose the bad guys, they should have also publicly identified the good guys0 -

Good point
That one slipped by me. There wasn't any mention of the honest company's name. Not fair at all. A long time ago I went on a service call with the same problem. It was a radio personality on a local show. He had changed his filter and not put the bottom panel of the furnace on completely. I found it right away and showed him so it wouldnt happen again. I then told him since he still had to pay a minimum service charge I would clean his system and I did. Good thing too. His A/C condensor was clogged with dog hair. Long story short, he mentions me and my company on the radio that afternoon but complained that he got charged for just putting a panel back on correctly. The media slants our perspectives so much that everyone wants to play the victim. It makes a better story in their view I guess. I cater to the view expressed in the old Ann Murry song. "I sure could use, a little good news today".... WW
