Manual priming of oil lines.

Untill recently, I thought there was nothing wrong with priming a single overhead oil line by operating the pump. After spending the spring attending various seminars and training, I have been sold on the idea of using a manual pump to prime the line to save pump wear.

My question, whats the best way to hook up your manual pump? open the prime port on the oil pum, and connect a plactic line from the prime port to the suction side of my manual pump?

What are your experiences?

    My solution

I always use flexible braided hoses to connect the burner to the tigerloop, or filter. I install the braided line with the union end on the burner ports. When I want to manually prime using my hand pump, I simply close the service valve at the garber filter, disconnect the braided line to the supply side of the burner oil pump, and once I have purged the air, I quickly remove the hand pump, and re-connect the braided line.

A better way to do it is to simply install a "T" on the outlet side of the filter, or supply side of the tigerloop, but I haven't thought of that yet...... and the way I have always done it is not all that messy if your careful. Well now I have to change my oil boiler install list so that I always have a "T" on the line....... always learning

We install a black tee right after the oil filter , standard on every new install . All you have to do is remove the plug on the top of the tee and connect a push-pull pump .

    Norm, I always ........................

just put a fitting on my hand vacuum pump hose and remove line at pump firomatic after shutting off tank valve, open valve again and remove between 1/2 to 1 gallon of oil, on last pull shut off tank valve , remove hose and reinstall oil line, turn valve back on and "prime" pump the normal way. Works all the time and less fittings to cause problems down the road. On any runs close to 50' I would use 1/2" line ,also doesn't hurt to power purge the line before giving it the final "all set".
