the most critical insulation detail. Perimeter next important. At least 1-1/2- 2" around these areas. I might back off to 1" below the basement slab, being 8 feet in the ground, and all, it would stay around 50-55°.
The edge of a garage slab could see outdoor temperatures and really drive a high delta t and huge losses.
Play close attention to ground water, french drain, and gutter details in, and around basements. Running water will really wick away heat from a slab. You may never know what hit you :)

insulate or not?
I am building a new house in Minnesota and I am putting in floor heat in my basement and garage. The house is a walkout rambler, and I will have an outside wood burning stove as my primary heat source. People tell me I need to Insulate the floor w/2" foam, but some say thats over kill. Is it worth it to insulate?0 -
insulate or not
Tongue in cheek reply: If you like flowers year round the perimeter of the garage and have enough money to heat the ground under your basement, why bother.... You know how cold it gets in Minn. and where do you think the embedded tubing in the concrete is going to loose most of it's heat to. I suppose you are not going to install any insulation in the side walls nor windows or doors either. Think about it?0 -
Snow melt
It will also keep the snow from piling up infront of the garage and make sure your boiler is well exercised!!!!!!
If it was me and I was paying the heating bill I would do it, make sure you insulate the edge of the slab.

some place to .....
attach the tubing, to the insulation that is. I'm in central MN and the way I do it is run 2" styrofoam on edge along the perimeter 1' down and then cover the floor of the basement and garage with 2" styrofoam and the staple the tubing to the foam and your ready for cement!Good Luck
