What brand do you guys prefer, and how much do these normally cost? Is Beckett a good one? Application is a cold start boiler with 3 zones and 3 sep circ pumps. Is it better to run it in a maintain heat mode when installing an outdoor reset since it will go into Warm weather shut down anyway coorect?

Dear Brian,
The Beckett Heat Manager is a great control option for improving your system efficiency and saving money on your heating bills. However, the Heat Manager is not an outdoor reset control, it does not require an outdoor sensor which makes the installation much easier. Beckett calls it a "fuel economizer." The price on the Heat Manager is very inexpensive compared to what you would pay for an outdoor reset control. We have sold many of these controls over the last six months and we have had very positive feedback on it from our customers. Here is a little idea from Beckett's website on how it works.
HeatManager automatically adjusts burner firing patterns
and average boiler water temperature to match system heat
load. Its action is similar to outdoor reset method, but does
not require an outdoor sensor. HeatManager works with the
existing boiler control/AquastatTM to reduce fuel consumption,
wear on parts and flue emissions. For complete, detailed
explanation, and reference on HeatManager visit

God Luck,

Brian, check out a Tekmar 256 if you want to take control of your boiler.0 -
We have 3 models...
The AQ475, which varies burner run time; the AQ675 that uses a 3 way mixing valve and actuator for reset and the AQ775, which can be used with either a 4-way rotary valve or an injection pump for reset. Visit customer.honeywell.com, just log on & follow the prompts. These products are available at any hydronic-oriented Honeywell distributor.0 -
Whoa buddy!
Let's get the first thing first. What kind of a boiler are you putting this on? Iron? Steel? Condensing? And then three zones of what? Baseboard? Radiators? Floor? Combination of these?
What method of temp protection are you going to use if your boiler requires it?0 -
Type of boiler
It is a Peerless cast iron hot water boiler installed in 1972, 3 zones of cast iron radiators, one zone has small section of cast iron basboard in bath and kitchen. It uses a aquastat set at 180, and 3 switching relays from the T-stats that are wired in series to trigger the burners and each circulator in a cold start setup. I was going to replace this entire system with 3 smaller boilers and put each apt. on its own gas meter but I might wait and try an outdoor reset for the next year to cut down the energy bills. In other posts I was thinking of using tankless Tagaki units but the consensus on here have told me its not a good application for such a approach with various factors such as the fact they are not true boilers, code approval issues, control issues, cast iron radiator issues, etc. etc. The current boiler still works great but its a fuel hog and very oversized according to my current heat loss calcs. The house has had replacement windows put in a few years ago and new entrance doors which all help cut the heat loss even more. We rent the 3 apts heat and hot water included since there is one gas meter and wish to lower our operating expenses. I have had some great advice on this site form everyone. If you have some other ideas please let me know, thanks!0
