    old cruciable or kiln?

    Before you get to involved, have the dark inner place checked for nasty environmental residue. It may have been used to evaporate mercury from gold. just a SWAG here!

    Not local. From an old house website. They DID mention finding "nasty environmental residue".

    Must say it does look like a crucible--hadn't even thought of that.
