\"Master Venting\" - adding air vents to a steam system

Member Posts: 1
Some time ago I attended a seminar on heating system maintenance and efficiency given by NYC - HPD, for owners of multiples. They talked about what they called "Master Venting" - adding several additional air vents at the top of steam risers just before the last radiator - to get the heat to the top much faster. We were talking mainly about four story buildings (mine is an 8-family 4 story, 28 x 80, with 4 risers). By law, the instructor couldn't give us names of heating system people who knew how to do this. First, no one else seems to have heard of "Master Venting", and second, I can't find any plumbers who don't think I'm a little crazy. I need to find a heating system plumber who could look at the system and see if this is workable in my building without causing some other problem and if so, how many vents, what size, and exactly where to place them. E-plumber from Plbg.com pointed me this way. Sincerely hope you can help. Sendy@nyc.rr.com. Thanks so much.

sjpe, do you have a copy of Dan's book, The Lost Art of Steam Heating? In there he talks of Frank Gerrity's Master Venting and related techniques. Seem pretty simple and straight forward. From what I've read there and on this board, you can just remove the angle valve at the top rad, install a T, vent off the top of the T, and move the rad at bit, using a gate valve (I think?). Hopefully Steamhead will pick up on this post and comment.0 -
thats about it
you vent the mains extremely fast and go modest on the radiators..like gorton #2's on the mains and risers and gorton c's on the rads.
