back flow preventer

The Backflow Preventer goes BEFORE the feeder. This would allow a person to use an iron body feeder if their dementia forced them to do so.

We do NOT EVER install Iron body feeders.

    we never use autofills, but

I can't think of any reason why the bfp should cause a problem. Are they double checks or rpz? Gosh, maybe you have discovered something?

    BFP location

If you install the BFP after the autofill valve, how will it work if there is a check valve in the autofill. The BFP belongs in the cold water line BEFORE the PRV. That's why the combo units come the way they do.

    hey Al

the whole purpose of the bfp is to prevent boiler water from backsiphoning into the potable, so why should we care if there is an extra check valve in the way?..Now I'm not saying we should do it that way, but I wouldn't change it either if it was already piped that way.

Because I don't like to use iron body feeders. :)

In my experience, they get full of poop faster than the brass ones. And before all the hoopla about backflow preventers years ago, I could not see installing one on a water line, just like I would never cap off a water line with a black cap.

I would not specifically change it either.

Not that this has ANY grounds in truth or reality, but I have had inspectors correct friends jobs when they used the feeder first.

To me, in my small mind, the BFP HAS to go first. But that's just me.

While on the topic, is a swing check a suitable bfp for this useage?

the pressure reducing valve cannot sense the actual pressure in the system with a check valve of any sort between it and the appliance
