Starting a boiler

While I'm older than I like, I still don't remember how the old boilers were started. I shoveled coal at my Grand Parents, but realized I never knew how the beast got it's start. How did the early boilers get going?

I think they used kerosene

in much the same way you'd use lighter fluid on a charcoal grill. Kerosene was also called "coal oil" in those days.
