    Non-Electrics

There have been a few posts lately about heat sources not requiring electricity. There is a hardware store in Ohio specializing in non-electric appliances. Check it out.

I am in no way affiliated with this store.

I always loved the pictures of their parking lot full of buggies.

    Back in the day...

Twenty-six years ago my brand new wife & I lived in a three room cabin in the woods. A delightful place then (& now), but (what say we say?) a bit rustic. Wood cookstove in the kichen, fireplace (later a woodstove) in the main room. A pond full of bass & bream, a dug well (with handpump to supplement the electric one). No near neighbors (two sets in two directions a couple of ridges over). Electric service failed several times a month, sometimes for days. Our first winter's big purchase was a thick down comforter. Lehman's catalogue (& another outfit, the name escapes me) was a source of daydreaming. Full of great stuff from the height of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Susan never would go for the James Washer, 'though. (It's a laundry machine that looks like a 55 gallon barrel cut in half lengthwise with an agitator activated by vigorously shoving back & forth on an upright arm.)

We moved up the mountainside & into a 100 year old house with nice neighbors & all the mod cons (like an ancient & misunderstood steam system). I figured a way to put in an electric washer & dryer. Still miss the cabin, the woodstoves, etc. She still doesn't want a James Washer.

I am am man on a mission to find one of these. Can you help?
I have been looking for the wooden version for over five years. These make a perfect wedding present- working together on a project instead of sitting in a state of paralysis in front of the tube.
  • Most importantly

you've had 26 good years together. Congrats.

And I'll bet your steam system runs perfectly now.

    Thanks for your kindness

She is indeed a blessing - only one lapse of judgement, and that was 26 years ago!

Like the marriage, the boiler is a work in progress; but as that obscure band from Liverpool says, things are getting better all the time.

Thanks to you and to all the Wallies for advice & entertainment.

    \"Sitting in a state of

paralysis in front of the tube", what an Anti-aphrodisiac is that??? "Honey, let's not watch this, let's go make another child, so it can inherit the mess we are leaving behind.

What a perfect way of describing what is going on in too many homes today.

Make some ice-scream, biscuits or pancakes from scratch, or red beans & rice with smoked pork neck bones for flavouring, chop wood, anything, just get away from the damn TV!!!

Rant on. Doncha love being able to say what you need to say, to people who will agree, or people who will call you on your s*&t, but will still welcome you back..priceless.

    The sweet smell of freedom.

    T'is why I'm here, folks.

    Everybody likes ice cream

Lehman's website lists three hand-crank models from $150 on up. I've got to confess to using the electric one, though.

$150 and up !! That doesn't surprise me at all

I grew up in that area. You gotta hand it to Lehmans - they charge top buck and more on their website and at the Kidron store. That's the price for the 'English' (read not Amish or Mennonite) folks. You have to drive down the road about 2 miles to get to their other store to get the same items priced reasonably.

Someone mentioned the picture of the buggies - if you go, take a walk behind the building. There is a huge parking lot full of buses that bring the seniors - hundreds and hundreds every day to be separated from their $$$. Didn't P.T. Barnam say something about this. . . . . ? Oh well - free enterprise.
