Ultra combustion noise?

About converting an 80 to LP. I'm sure the 80 LP is a factory only item. The rest are field converted.

Why, I don't know, but would like to.

    Ultra 80 LP combustion noise?

Anyone else have or heard of a noise problem with the Ultra 80 on propone. Set it up with my combustion analyzer, CO2 9.4%, O2 4.1%, CO 28 ppm. 12.7" wc inlet gas pressure. Almost a growling resonating noise coming from air intake. Any help?

    I had a similar issue

with another brand 80K on LP. When does it make the sound? Mine did it when it ramped to low fire, only.

The intake air was not completed when I fired it. After finishing that, the noise went away.

Was this field converted to LP?

I've also heard drilling a small 1/2" hole in the intake air pipe can eliminate this resonance.

Increasing the LP pressure, within acceptable range, may also do the trick.

Better get the manufactures approval before trying any "not in the book fixes"

I be interested in knowing hown you make out with this. I have a Ultra 80 to change over to LP, and install in the next few days.

I think Weil prefers you buy the 80's with the correct fuel and not convert in the field? Seems to be the only model that does not come shipped with the conversion.

    Ultra Noise

    Hot Rod,

JonM is doing this install for me. I was just at the new house listening and it is as you suggested. The noise is when ramping to low fire.

Also, the unit is LP from the factory, not a conversion. LP in the house was set to 12.8 inches water back a few weeks ago and Jon measure it at 12.7 today.

That plastic intake "horn" sure looks like a musical intrument to me!

Had a 105 that was doing that....

found out that some of the exhaust was recirculating back into the intake. I just had the two pipes sticking out the side of the house with out the cover that is provided on the pipes yet. When I hung the cover over the pipes the problem went away. The breeze was coming at that side of the house that day and help to cause the recirculation.

    I call it a blooiee pipe :)

I think it was designed to breakup those sound waves, not amplifiy them :) Although it sure does look like a horn to increase noise.

I still suspect something in the intake air circuit and or piping.

    I'll bet..

..that the final solution is to slightly change the length of a piece of plastic pipe. Since no two guys will install with the exact same dimensions, the odds of many guys having this problem are slim.

If I had studied music instead of engineering, I might have better ideas for a quick fix!

Finally got around to calling Weil-McLain today. They walked me through setting low idf speed. 1300 rpm is what it was set for, they had me set to 1600 rpm. Seemed to take care of problem. Now low fire will be about 18,000 btu's rather than 13,000. Just thought you'd like to know.
