Chris A. and I went to look
at a boiler replacement. We where led to a closet door that had a smaller door that went down to the smaller crawl space.
What we saw was the Winner in the Halloween photo contest.
This poor thing was ridden hard, put away wet and Never Cleaned. The top is about three inches from the cement board.
Check out the photo of the relief valve.... Aahhhh.
Chris got my reaction as we found this poor thing behind the I-beam
Scared Me.

You should see if you could farm that one out to Ron Jr. Thats got his name written ALL over it. I think he likes it too.
Good luck with that thing.

Yikes!!
That is going to be a miserable install. If I was Chris, I would call in sick until someone else does the job.

Looks like
a lot of points toward the installation Hall of Fame once it's done.
Go Chris and Scott,

That Carlin
can't be the original. Looks like the starting point for a house fire! That beam looks cooked!0 -
That picture of you in the crawlspace...
... you look as if you're afraid that Chris is just about to close and bolt the access hatch...
MUAAHHAHAAHAHAHAH! :-P
That should be a fun one. Happy Halloween!0 -
There oughtta be a law...
You win! A Hall of Shame winner. Not going to be easy to do a changeout...what's in store? Can't see you lowering a Vitola through the hatch...

Paul,
NO-CHANCE!!!
We're looking for something that's short and a knockdown. The steel beam has about 24" that we can slide under, and the unit HAS to be a front clean out model that can be moved easily by 2 people at MOST while on their knees.
I think it will come down to either a Biasi or if we decide to disassemble and re-assemble in place maybe a Buderus 115. I looked at the Crown Freeport, but I think the swing door (large) will make things difficult to fully open, while being able to meet the flue connector.
Maybe Mr. Hunt is right.....Paging Dr. Winteroff...Paging Dr. Winteroff.....Chris0 -
Keep me far away
from that crawling nightmare ! I got my own headache to deal with for the next week , maybe more .
I'm sure whatever choice you make , it'll be a beautiful job , crawlspace or not . Keep us updated on this one .0 -
Hey Chris
A Burnham LE boiler would fit in there. Weighs 325 pounds, front door swings open for cleaning, very short. Check it out here.
I do not envy you on this one. Even Ron Jr. can at least stand up on his squeezer jobs.
Best of luck find Dr.Winteroff!

Anyone who
designs a house or building w/ a boiler, or furnace, in a crawl space, or on an open roof, should have to service it, for free, for all of his natural life. And. When he dies, his family should have to crawl thru a scuttle hole, or climb a 30' ladder, to place flowers (or other things) on his grave.
JMHO.

was that look on your face
the end (pun intended) result of your butt coming in contact with the 220 volts at the water heater's thermostat?!?

If you do not
Know where to place the heating & cooling equipment so it can be properly serviced. Then you should not be allowed to call your self a Builder.0 -
Pics
I've got some scary stuff i'll have to put up here as well but NOTHING is as scary as that dude in the blue shirt. Man If I ran into that guy in the crawl space I'd probably pee myself.0 -
How about a System 2000.We did one 6 or 7 years ago in a similar installation. It was a split entry.Used a furniture dolly to get under carrying beam, replaced new york tube style boiler in 2 foot deep pit.We used top flue model but side flue is another possibility. Serviced once since installed---the less often the better.0 -
Holy S*******
I see by the primary control tossed over into the parts graveyard that someone was trying to do them a "FAVOR" by keeping the boiler going. How much CO fo you think was blowing out of that firetrap? If you go look in the other corner of the crawlspace you will see the empty 40's that the other installers had brought for "lunch". I am with markie. Chris, I think your rotator cup will have to act up the day of that install.

I'll bet you guys aren't competing for this bid. Scott you ought to tack on a lot of extra money on this bid, Chris deserves a bonus if he get's stuck with that pig.

artist
you betcha just did some art in a couple of old 1700s half dug , half basement crawl space disasters . We pronounce that ArTEEST . Steve is exploring his melted pex period kind of like Dali but more minimalist with just a hint of a French master in the layered look of the painted plywood . As for me when I look at those soot marks on your crawl space unit all i see is a butterfly .....0 -
Heck with that!
Abandon that dude right where he sits. Slip a Munchie or Pinnacle up next to the beam pipe over a couple feet to it and run like hell!
All the old Iron might be holding up the floor!0 -
Scott
I love it when you talk tough.

\"Aaahhh Crawl spaces\" brought back nightmares of this one
This boiler was in a hole the trench goes to a sump to keep the water away.0 -
A little more time with that relief valve. You can register with NASA. Then you will have plenty of room to work.0 -
Hey Patrick,
At least with a side cleanout, that one stood a chance. Still nasty though! Chris0 -
LORDY
isn't that first pic scary!!!!!!0 -
After dissecting...
