The Gauge glass bounce

Could a Hartford loop that's measures 2" from the water to the center of hartford loop Tee cause this ? The rest is piped properly per "The lost art of steam heat" book. We have over 24 " to the header sized up to 3". The main is 2". The main vent is in the proper spot. Our "A" dimension is more than 28". Iknow the water is supposed to go up & down. I'm not sure like this. thank you.

  • First thing I'd do

is skim that boiler. Many times the bouncing is caused by oil sitting on top of the water, forcing the steam to bully its way past the oil.

  • I just redid the near-boiler-piping. The guy that installed it first did it very wrong. So I guess hammering and using the sawzall and stuff can put impurities in the water that would cause it. I'll try flushing out the system. Thanks

    I agree with steamhead

try skimming the boiler first. That's the best way to remove oil. Simply flushing the system is not as effective for removing oil.

  • So I guess you're telling me that I have to remove the pipe coming out the top of the boiler then. There must be an easier way (I hope).
    thank you

    a tapping for skimming....

should be on the side of the casting. Look for one that is near the top of the boiler, ie. the top gauge glass tap, a side outlet relief tap. Since you repiped some of the system it's very likely you introduced some oil and other contaminents. Observe the water as it runs slowly out of the skim line and you'll be amazed what you see! The shinning film of oil, pieces of casting sand, work gloves, a old T-shirt. Have patience, Best Regards.
