Short cycling of new steam boiler

Thanks Mike T. The pressure control is set to cut in at 0.5 psi and cut out at 1.5 psi. The vacum pressure gauge reads a constant 0.35 psi and 0.45 psi while the boiler is running.

Short cycling of new steam boiler

Recently, I had a new gas boiler (Weil McLain EG-PEG 55) installed in my home, which has a one-pipe steam system. Although the existing thermostat (Honeywell Chronotherm with pin settings) workeed fine with the old (45 years) oil-fired boiler, it short cycles the new boiler. The only way to get heat is to turn the thermostat control way up. I would greatly appreciate a recommendation so as to purchase a new programmable thermostat that is compatable with the new boiler. I am most interested in precise temperature control. Thank you.

    I like The Honeywell 8000

Vision Pro/8000 by Honeywell is nice and gives very tight control on your equipment. For now check the anticipator on the stat. Set at highest setting 1.2 or there about. Also, what is your pressure control set for at the boiler? Your Installing Co. would probably check out your problem at no cost if it's 1 year or less. Let them know what you are seeing.

    Not a Vacum System

With my comment about the pressure gauge, I did not mean to convey that this is a vacum system. The gage is simply a low pressure type that measures pressure from 1.0 to 3.0 psi. Sorry for any confusion.

Where can I get a pressure gauge from 1.0 to 3.0 or even as high as 5.0 with 1/4" thread. When running .5 to 1.5 its too hard to see pressure on a 0-30 lb gauge.

    low pressure gauge

I bought mine at Grainger, on line. Item # 2C637. measure in ounces up to 20. I have a vapostat and rune system between 4 and 14 ounces. Works great.

    Shory cycling problem solved

Thanks for your expert advice Mike T. I did as you said, turning the heat anticipator up to the 1.2 setting, and the problem was solved. I will probably get the Vision Pro 8000 anyway because my thermostat is a dinosaur by comparison.

    Low pressure gauge

I bought the Wika O-3 psi gauge with a 1/4" threading online.

    Vaporstat for conventional steam system?

I too had considered the use of a vaporstat rather than a pressuretrol on my steam system, but opted for the pressuretrol. I was advised that a vaporstat is primarily for vapor systems rather than conventional steam systems. Is there any issue with short cycling when using the vaporstat on a coventional steam system? Many thanks.
