...but I am not looking to replace the entire system right now.
I just want to fix what I know is broken - one component: The system came with an older Johnson Controls M15 damper. It had gone bad and was disconnected before I bought the house. The vent flap was fixed in the "open" position. This is causing the house to lose warm air through the always-open flue.
I have the vent damper replacement - a JC M35. I want it back in place to perform its function.
A whole new system would be better, yes, but if I ask for help on some specific item, and I post diagrams and photos to narrow things down, and then I get the old "why dontcha just get a whole new system" what kind of "help" is it?
*** Reply:.... Diagrams and photos are needed so we can see what EXACTLY you have in order to turn you in the right direction. Sorry that we personally wasted your time with our opinions and kindness to respond to your Question. Technically, for liability rerasons we cannot even suggest on how you should wire in the Vent damper. That's how law suits get started. Sounds like you have all the answers and I cannot BELIEVE that you would disrespect this forum with a Quote like "What kind of help is it"!!!!! So much for our opinions,...We only try to help others and dont need a statment like THAT ONE>

Wiring M35 Vent to Bryant
I have an older Bryant 394 and a new M35 Johnson Controls Vent Damper. Photos and diagrams are here:

If You Don't Mind Me Asking
From the looks of the board and the Bryant numbers, it appears that this unit is about 20 years old. If you don't mind the question, what are your intentions/goals/reasons for doing this?
The reason I ask is that, given the age of the equipment, you are better off replacing the unit if your goal is to save money on your heating bill.
At any rate, having a pro come out to inspect the equipment would not be such a bad idea and, while he's there, would be able to wire up the vent damper if, in his opinion, it would be worthwhile to do so.
I know this was not the answer you were hoping for, but I sincerely think you would be happier with a new system.

I hope you kept the old cord...
for the damper, as you need the special plug that slides onto the side of the circuit board. If you have it, plug the flat end into the furnace circuit board, and plug the square end into the damper socket. I done this on a few occasions. Usually though, I eliminate the damper all together, and replace the circuit board so the break away tab is in place again.0
