steam tips for a rookie

Keep your eyes and ears open and you will learn well. There must be a few technicians you are working with that have at least a working knowledge of steam systems. And, hopefully, there are still others (such as HVACTECH58?)that have a more comprehensive understanding of them. As mentioned in a previous post, you must obtain a copy of Mr. Holohan's LOST ART OF STEAM HEATING.

Also, Patrick Lindhardt has a great book out entitled "Lindhardt's Guide to Steam Heating". Both of these books are available in the "Shop for Books and More" section of this website.

Keep searching for knowledge and never be ashamed or embarrassed to ask those experts around you for assistance. And, if you haven't figured it out yet, there are many, many experts on THE WALL.

Best of luck.

    Learn Steam

Buy "The Lost Art of Steam Heating" in the books and more section. You won't regret it.

    You're at the right place

    (like your handle)

Here are some great people on steam. I don't just mean they do great steam work, they have a passion for steam, they teach, they support their trade and community...

Read every thread on steam on this list. Don't be shy, when someone says something you don't understand ask what they mean. Look at the pictures that they post, ask more questions. Rememebr, every question you ask has 10 other people too shy to ask the same thing.

Get a digital camera and take pictures of the jobs you work on. Compare them against the ones the top people do. You could even post a couple pictures of your work. These people will be unbelievably ready to help you improve your work.

You will also want to follow the threads about burners and burner problems. There are folks who know this inside out as well, and several of them have many thousands of students who will back up their their great teaching skills.

    best of luck,
    jerry

And watch out, you may soon become an outstanding steam person.

thank you so much for the words of wisdom and encouragement. Some tradesman that I have come in contact with would rather convert the steam to hot water.I think because they don't understand it. I would rather learn now and rip later.
    Thanks Again

    You're absolutely right

Those are the Knuckleheads who don't understand steam, or the damage they can cause by converting these old systems. Kind of like the ones who fired both boilers for years at the job I posted recently, when only one was needed to heat the whole five-building complex.

Ask all the questions you want, that's why we're here. Pretty soon you'll be ready to join the select few who have designed and installed steam systems.
