Steam replacement sizing

Add up the square footage of all of your radiators using a proper chart to determine the size of each one and then unless you plan on adding more or removing any of those radiators size your boiler exactly to that square foot size of connected load. Going by any other method or using any other calculations will not give you a proper size boiler for steam. Sizing steam boilers is not like Hot Water or Hot Air or anything else for that matter. You need to focus on the total square footage of your connected radiation.

steam boiler sizing
Need some help with understanding an old boiler. The old boiler to be replaced is a National Gas 8-44. The rating tag: 472,500 btu., 1580sq.ft.steam, 2520 water. This does not square with the the old specifications found in the library. This boiler is prior to 1959, and was installed in the late 30's. There is evidence of a coal chute. The boiler is presently Natural Gas. My inclination is to size to the sq.ft. of steam, but this greatly increases my btu input to 600,000 plus.0 -

Your heating contractor needs to figure the square footage of radiation in your home to match a boiler. Don't go by the old boiler it could be way over sized...0 -
Some questions
In order to answer your question better, I think we need some more information. Is it a one-pipe or two pipe system? What is the design-day heat loss of the building?0 -
steam sizing-brad rutherford
I have a simular question on steam sizing as brad. the very old steam boiler has a 325,000 btu input burner. The house has 950 sq ft of ci radiation which puts me close to 400,000 input on the new boiler. This is 20-30% larger than the old one and more efficient. This is a two pipe system what if it is changed to hot water.0
