It was $2.62 yesterday morning and $2.85 last night.
Diesel is $2.99, Fuel oil is $2.43/gl and when I spoke to the manager of one of the LP companies he informed me that over 70% of the LP in this country comes from the areas hit by Katrina. For them it's not a matter of price, it's if they'll be able to get it period.

It would be absolutely stupid to purchase any heating equipment other than what will deliver the best possible efficiency.

Kinda puts a new perspective on the term "life as we know it."

"Here" is Northern Lower Michigan BTW.

We have been preaching system efficiency

for the last two years. Our arguement, for taking care of systems with preventative maintainence, has even more merit with these higher and higher energy prices. I am not happy that it is taking someone elses disastor to bring our point home, but the rational we have been stating has even greater importance now with this new energy paradyne.

Large problems always present opportunities for others. We are now facing a severe problem for the entire country. Fuel efficiency will become a necessity and not an option.
Cars, heating and cooling systems will be forced to take into account the sharp drop in fuels readily available. This economic force will bring many chages to our way of life.

    Still puzzles me

How can gas stations pump up prices on gasoline that is already in the tanks and invoiced to them? That's like announcing a price increase in a dozen eggs and raising the price of eggs in the cooler, ones that have already been invoiced at a lower price. What am I missing here?

In all honesty, profit margins at the pump are so slim and the inventory turnover so rapid that gas stations value their inventory by the cost of replacement. (Although price reductions usually only come after the inventory is replenished.)

    No choice

Example: I'm a station owner and I buy a tank full of gas for $2.00 which sells for $2.15. Before the tank is gone my cost goes to $2.25. If I maintain the $2.15 price I don't have enough money to buy the $2.25 tank. The effect is that I have now lost $.10/gl on the entire tank I bought for $2.00. I have to raise the price based on replacement cost.

I remember thinking/talking this through with dad in the late 70's early 80's when inflation was 7-8% and higher. We were maintaining the same margins on our goods in the hardware store and the overhead was steady but we were losing money every quarter. We started looking at invoices and comparing selling prices to the replacement cost. AHAA! instant answer. The new goods were enough higher that our margins were actually lower than the books showed.

The reverse is true when prices come down. You can drop the cost of items you actually paid more for because replacement cost is less.

In a market as volatile as fuel is right know, the station owners are tracking prices by the hour according to one local owner.

    Only $2.65 here.

One local family owns a chain of quick shops and the energy company that supplies gas to a good sized region and over 90% of the local stations. They were fined heavily after 9-11 for price gouging and are still a bit skittish.

About 3 years ago a "cash only" station that sells ONLY gas opened with prices always lower than those of that families'. Station thrived and opened another. The quick shop side of that family sued claiming they were selling gas below their cost. They were essentially laughed out of court--twice considering they appealed the first judge's decision not to allow the case to proceed.

    Replacement Cost

That's how it's always calculated in retail pricing. Otherwise, the retail outlet wouldn't be able to maintain supply.

Vancouver BC 3.61/gal (USD equivalent) and climbing

and the new more expensive gas has not yet arrived here. How do y'all manage your outstanding quotes what with th cost of getting to and from work being completely unpredictable and all?

  • I'd take that a step further.

Preach system efficiency, and preach LOW WATER TEMPERATURES. If you need 180 degree water to heat your house, you are locked into fossil fuel (pretty much) or high-usage electric boilers.

If you only need 100 degree water to heat your house, you can do that a whole lot of ways. Solar, geo, wood, pellets...

Give your clients an "out" if fossil fuels give up the ghost in our lifetimes. Hate to see people have to abandon their heating systems and put in woodstoves...

Of course, some people have been doing this since the last oil crunch. Starting to look like some others should have been... hate to see what's going to happen at $5/gallon and up. And it's coming, ladies and gentlemen!

The time for PROPER (low temp) radiant systems, and low temp radiators is here. I'm biased, of course, but anything else just seems like a real gamble these days, doesn't it?

He's a local mechanic who is usually always the highest around but worth it for the services he provided when needed. Nice to see he's still being fair.

and after his bulk tank is empty

he will either have to dip into his mechanicing fund to buy the next tankful or stop selling gasoline.

    right now

The Atlanta Gas price website showed a listing of gas at a high of 5.79 per gallon.

This evening, our Governer imposed a ban on stations raising gas prices beyond what they currently were, unless the station could prove the need.

I have never seen so many people lined up to buy gas this evening.

    Don't deter

The higher prices may take a chunk out of the budget but try and take that vacation this weekend if it was in your plans. Our family is renting a cottage by a lake in central Michigan -- about a two-hour drive from home. That's about a 1/2 tank so it won't make much of a difference. I filled the tank at $3.09 tonight. Maybe I'll drink one less Budweiser.

    Then again, maybe not.

    No offense, Fred

but Dave has been in business long enough to get through the deep dark seventies so I'll put his business sense ahead of your cynicism.

More of us should have Mr. Hall's attitude. One less beer anyone?

The price that the dealer charges is what it costs him plus the taxes. the gas in the tanks still belong to the corp. that supp;ies the gas to the station. the dealer does not own the gas its on consignment.

It's called selling based on replacement cost. That's what we do when we can.

    More good news

The manager of the largest propane supplier in this area just stopped by and informed me that his raw cost of LP just went up $.32/gl this morning. The pipeline company he buys it from says supplies will definitely be allocated by as early as January. He has most of his customers locked in on their prebuy at $1.49 but he only has 6 Million gallons in storage. Open market LP will be over $2.75/gl as early as mid winter from what he can see.

BTW regular gas is back up to $3.49 this AM
