What is the rule of thumb for sizing a forced air unit?
-heating BTU/sq ft
-cooling ton/sq ft
-heating BTU/sq ft
-cooling ton/sq ft

No rule of thumb
Any type of heating/cooling appliance must be sized based on an accurately done heat loss calculation for your structure. Click on free "heat loss calcs" to the left here and do it. It's as simple as that. I've seen wildly oversized units based on rules of thumb that cost their owners mega $$ overtheir life span.

There are a lot of different factors in doing a heat load on a house, including, but not limited to, the number and size of the windows, the R value of the walls, doors, and windows. Ceiling insulation and floor type(slab, crawl, basement, peirs) has a lot to do with.
