Water Softeners

Does anyone have experience with salt alternative type water softeners? I have very hard water and need to condition it to prolong the life of piping, boiler, appliances, etc. I don't want to add sodium if the alternatives work well. Are catalytic better than hydromagnetic types? Any particular brands superior, or to be avoided?

Here You Go
Here's a thread from an engineering board I frequent (www.eng-tips.com). Somebody must have posted something inappropriate, because the string got deleted, but by the time that happened, it was pretty much played-out anyway. I had it saved before that happened.

I'm not sure you can
actually REMOVE calcium or hardness without ion exchange.
Magnets and others tend, according to their claims, to keep the hardness in suspension, not remove it.
This link has an excellent article on ion exchange.

Use potassium chloride instead of salt
if you're concerned about sodium intake although if you eat a hot dog a week or drink a glass of milk a day you're likely getting more sodium than you will with softened water.0 -
go to
superiorwaterconditioners.com I have one in my house and like it real well. Non-chemical super ionizer. I have pretty hard water and it works very well0 -
I bought and installed
a magnetic (115 volt) induced softenor some years back and all it does is use half a bucks worth of energy a minth. I just buried behind a TV and water meter and forgot to unplug it.
It is worthless and does sbsolutely nothing. All the independent studies and government research shows they do nothing. The only folks advocating the technology are those who market the product; which in and of itself tells you something.
This helps explain why:
