Coal / Oil boiler replacement
The homeowner let it be known that the door we'd be going through was brand new . The floors we'd be going over were new Pergo . He was very leery of us even taking the new door off the hinges , but the alternative was to handtruck over much more Pergo floor than we needed to .
The closet this mammoth is in made it amazingly hard to rip out . The right side wall was only a few inches from the jacket . The coal burner was inches away from the back wall - and the worm gear was sticking through a wall that was built around it . We couldn't get the coal burner apart , and it had to weigh well over 200 lbs . It wouldn't just slide out - there was a secondary shroud inside the chamber that kept it in . We had to sawzall the shroud and move the boiler foward to break it free from the coal burner .
The boiler stripped down was 27 3/4 inches wide , the doorways were 28 inches . No matter how good you are with a handtruck , damage will be done when moving something this heavy and big with zero clearance . We're lucky that it was minimal .

2 zones , both circs on the return side of the boiler . The developer of these homes thought it'd be real nice ( cheaper ) to send a common supply pipe to the end of the basement and situate the flowvalves there .
I usually wouldn't post a job looking like this , but I was thinking about the recent thread on 2nd rate work . There was definitely room for improvement on this one , but we were literally too wiped out by the removal to think about it . We did cover the basics - room to clean the boiler , room to swing out the burner , easy access to the parts that might break , even sheetrock above the boiler . I stopped my helper from mounting any controls on the cleanout side too . But .... the wiring and piping coulda been neater . Still , I think we did an OK job for one day .0 -

OK??
My friend, that is by far the best "ok" job I have seen. Being someone that services system's as well as install, your taking the time to think of the future put's you a step and a half ahead of the rest!! I see way to many system's in my area that give no consideration to the guy who has to clean and maintain them. To bad I don't do service work in NY....:)0 -
No kidding ?
We really beat the crap out of the thing to get it out - we even cut through the worm gear with a sawzall . But that thing can sure take a beating , man . It's still in our dumpster at our shop . If anyone is interested just tell me what they're looking for and I'll see if it's in good shape still .0 -
It's a shame
that we see too many systems that are piped like a maniac did it . It's a bigger shame that just a tiny bit more effort and all these systems could've been serviceman friendly . They probably had a wide open basement when this was new , why pin the coal burner against the back wall ? The coil was back there too .
Yo man , I always do my best for guys like you who install and have to work on the equipment too . Hell , someday I might be in the service end of the business . I am getting tired of these marathon ripouts and my body can only take so much abuse . Thanks for the kind words Lchmb .0 -
Great job Ron !
The worm drive from the coal crap looks like it saw use about a dozen times before the owner realized that he had to MAINTAIN it, for it to work well.
I used to see it all the time. Wood and coal, each took work that the owner wouldn't do after the novelty wore off.
You have the patience of a saint my friend. If all those demands were given to me, MY first question would have been why didn't you do this FIRST? Ya just can't fix stupid.
Great job, again ! Chris0
