steam traps on hot water radiators

Years ago I worked a job where the specifying engineer had us leave the trap body but remove the element and drill out the orface. he spec'd out the size to drill it out to.
It worked, but I'd rather see the trap removed.

STEAM TRAPS ON HOT WATER RADIATORS
WHEN CONVERTING A STEAM HEATING SYSTEM TO HOT WATER CAN YOU LEAVE THE TRAPS ON THE RADIATORS?0 -
Before you convert that system
realize that you might be opening a huge can of worms. Read this:

To answer your question, you can leave the trap bodies there but you have to take the elements out of them.

steam traps on HW rads
You can leave them if you wish, but it won't work correctly. Typically a thermal trap has a reduced orifice opening to the return and this would restrict your flow. Remove them!!

What I've found...
is that most steam radiators tend to be even too big for standrad hot water design. Since this is the case, You can run a high delta tee over the rad with limited flow through that orifice and get lower return temps to your condensing boiler. On one pipe steam conversions, I usually use the 1/8 inch tapping for my return. If you do the flow rate calcs, you'd be surprised how much radiator you can support with that little opening.

rads traps
On all converison jobs, depending the size of radaitors, I removed the guts from the trap... Large ones, I drilled to same size of the pipe dia., don't have any plms with the heating as I zoned according to the job, etc..0 -
