how tricky is it to add sludge cleaner to the relief valve in the back of the boiler., and is this a good idea? I am stuck on stopping the hammering. I am very inexperienced home owner but we have hammering and sludge and have shimmed the radiators and have drained back the brown water and have replaced the steam valves. The hammering stops when I drain out the sludge but is back within 2-4 days! Any other advice?

This certainly sounds like a dirty boiler. If you are handy with a wrench, you can remove the safety valve and add chemicals that way. If you have a Smith or a Weil that are gasketed boiler and not push nipples, be careful what you use for cleaner. This really is a job for a pro. Get sonme help.

Water side cleaning

What in all probalby needs to be done first is a good boiler water side cleaning which means to remove the bottom boiler plugs and wash all the mud and crap out then put her back together and add askim tapping and skim the boiler ,but here's another question are your steam mains insulated and do you have wet returns if the mains are not insulated get them insulated and also have the pitch of your mains check and corrected .If you have wet returns have them flushed out also this will help get all that sludge out of your system ,this may be more then most HO are capable of doing my advise is to use the find a pro listing avaiable from this site andf get your self a pro it will cost you but it will be corrected and life will go on and your system will thank you peace and good luck clammy
