to add an automatic air vent to eliminate the air that used to be recovered and sent to the tank.
Verbal piping instructions.
Pipe rises from the boiler headed towards where the old ceiling hung expansion tank use to reside. Install isolation valve. next install drain cock. rise vertically until you are approximately 6" away from the ceiling. Install a tee in a normal configuration. In the top of this tee, install an automatic air vent. On the side branch of the tee, install a 1/2" nipple long enough to clear the radius of the tank you are installing. Couple to extend if necessary. Install elbow hanging down. Mount new expansion tank here. Support properly. Prior to filling with water, check the air charge on the tank. It should be filled to a point where the system altitude times 1/2PSI plus 5 PSI for residual pressure at the top of the system. This equates to 12 PSI for most normal 2-1/2 story houses.
Fill and purge the system. Turn the new tank into the system. and let'er rip.
Air elimination with this style of tank is critical.

Here is a nice expansion tank valve
from Webstone. Just a 1/2" threaded purge valve. Makes it nice for the mechanic that has to change out that tank someday.
It also helps if you need to raise the fill pressure to power purge.
You can remote mount the expansion tank with a piece of pex or PAP also to get it to a better mounting spot.
