yes the condensate "T" was installed and is working, make up air is from inside of the house, lose construction basement and no it is not near the sea. We are located close to Watertown. Yes combustion test was done at the time of install by Steve Grady from Buderus and the figures are still the same when I retested it the other day. The make up air was what Steve suggested as well and I am going to pipe it outside this weekend. Just not looking forward to drilling another 3 1/2 hole through solid wood a foot thick.

Thanks for all your ideas and questions.

    GB142 cleaning

Darin, Mark or anyone that has used alot of the GB142's. Have any of you guys cleaned them yet or went back to check for build up on the heatexchanger yet? I opened up the one that I installed last Oct. and it was caked up with hard white chrystals on the top row for coils only. This is a natural gas setup. I talked with Steve Grady from Buderus about this and he gave me some ideas, but I am wondering if I am the only one that has seen this yet or have other people seen this. Took 3 hrs to clean all the build up off. alot of water and brushing.

    thanks

    Haven't seen that

but we'll be on the look out.

Did you use the condensate drain tee on this install?

Some things that come to mind. Did you do a combustion analysis on start-up? Is the combustion air being drawn from a "dirty" area? As Mark said, Was the condensate tee used? I haven't seen that build- up so far. We do have some GB's that we will be doing check-ups on in the springtime. I will look for that white build-up condition.

    Sounds like...

... Mark could be right on the money, I too suspect that the condensate was not diverted, allowing it to leach/corrode the top layer of the HX.

Another possibility is salt in the air... I have seen the same white powdery residue on a boat and I presume you're dealing with the same sort of Aluminum oxide. This isn't a seaside install is it?

    White Chrystals

This isn't really a powder, it is like clumps of salt stuck together and stuck to the heatexchanger. kind of reminds me of Rock Salt but smaller chunks and the only way to get it off is with a real stiff brass brush and then inbetween the fins I had to use pipe cleaners.

    Isolate

Isolate the boiler from the make up water and make sure that there is not a leak in the HX. Buderus makes a great product, but sometimes things happen, and I have seen buildup like that on some similar products. It's a wild shot, but easy enough to do.

    White Crystals

I have seen this many times on MZ boilers. I don't know what it is but is brushes off easily. I then flush the heat exchanger with water to complete the cleaning. -DF

Dan, this can't be the same stuff then, this stuff is stuck real hard to the heat exchanger and doesnot want to brush off.
