Have two tandem units in mixed radiant/FHA install, no problems except condesate has pitted guttter above exhaust, make sure the plume is away from structure.

They do beat the **** out of any direct vent/power vent "standard" boiler. Quieter, less oil usage.

The biggest problem is the price point. I think that the $ per BTU is excessive. The will never catch on until the get to within 20% of a standard boiler setup.

Rep was helpful.

Make sure you modify block heater circuit or they will clog.

    Condensing Oil

Does anyone on the Wall have direct experience with the Monitor Products FCX Oil-fired Condensing Boiler? As oil prices rise, I would like to be able to offer this option - if it's a good one. What are the opinions of installers and end-users about this unit, how it performs, maintenance issues, durability, annual servicing and cleaning, etc. 95% efficiency sounds awfully attractive, but how does it stack up against conventional units that operate in the 85-87% range?

    No direct experience but

The folks at Brookhaven National Labs have had one in place for a few years. Pete Caruso at MPI might have references. Seems like a good product, one of a kind. Your concerns are good ones in that it all seems contra to what we tend to believe.

    FCX

    Ted,

If you are West of the Missippi call Pete, if not I can be reached at 717-235-8007. I have an FCX in my home and work for MPI, love to assist.

right now a condensing boiler would be great :) and a modulating condensing even better :)

    latent heat

available from oil is substantially less than the other fuels. Why would you want to risk sooting and fouling??? Stick with a good burner and setup and enjoy! Oil does it best at mid efficiency.

    The question

That's the question, isn't it? Is there a risk with this boiler. I know Monitor makes good products, but when I see the condition of some of the oil heating units we are called in to service, I have to question the wisdom of installing a condensing oil unit just to get an additional 8-10% out of it.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. I will be making some calls.

    FCX

I have an FCX unit that I had installed in 2002 and it has been relatively reliable, very quiet and very efficient. It came standard with a Heatwise gun assembly/burner and with the long run I have for the exaust the Heatwise did not have enough "push" to continue to run the boiler properly. A Beckett NX burner was installed and even on the windiest of days I am running perfectly. The factory(Tom Stayer with MPI) stood behind their product and I am pleased with the outcome.
