Main steam vent placement
I have a single pipe steam heating system in a 3 floor brownstone with no main vents. I've consulted with two plumbers and one recommends placing a hoffman #75 vent on the top floor at the top of the run (in my bedroom as a matter of fact). The other recommends placing the vent in the boiler room, gas fired, at the return piping. Having a vent in my in my bedroom concens me for noise and humidity issues but I'm not sure puting the vent in the boiler room will work. I have 1 1/4" vertical mains running a 25' with a 18' horizonatal run (2" pipe) from the boiler to the riser for a total run of approx. 33'. Which options is better or correct??0 -
Post the length and diameter of your mains. Someone will help.
OK, I see you edited your post. You have about .4 cu. ft. in your main. A Gorton No. 1 or Hoffman No. 75 would be sufficient to vent the main in the boiler room. If you vent the riser instead you may want to stay with a Hoffman No. 75 as I believe that vent closes against water, where the Gorton does not. Not sure of that but that is my recollection. Steamhead or any of the steam guys?0 -

Gortons do close against water
there are very few vents made today that don't. Either the Gorton #1 or Hoffman #75 is fine, but the Gorton is less expensive.
