differential loop

I recently installed a new Crown steam boiler that is short cycling. I sized the boiler based on the square footage plate on the old boiler. This system has a differential loop that makes a sound like a spring unloading (twang, for lack of a better term). The vent on the dif. loop continuously operates (makes noise).
Could this short cycling be from a malfunctioning dif. loop, a malfunctioning steam trap or did I simply oversize the boiler all together?
I am not exactly sure what the purpose of the dif. loop is, I know I read one of Dan's articles about them years back, but I cannot recall the details.

    Diff Loop

The diff loop is there from the coal days in the event of too much fire/pressure.It will equalize the return to allow returning condensate..In your case assuming your running proper low pressure it will just sit there....

You should have figgured the EDR of the system to proper size boiler. You took the last old guys guess...

Did you skim boiler yet ?

Sounds like you also need a bigger vent.....

    are you using a pressuretrol?

if so you need a vaporstat...less than 10 ounces..the loop cannot malfunction, as it has no moving parts.
