Steam Heating Systems

it is a one pipe system i dont see the return .It may come from behind the boiler.Weve come up with an alternative plan for heat,so i havent been back to further investigate .Out of curiosity would a steam radiator function at level or below boiler height. If there was a gravity return, would i be able to supply and return water and/or steam through that low level rad?

Can you pipe a steam radiator 10 feet below the steam header and will it funtion properly?

    Just as long

As you can return the condensate back to the return line thru grav. Guy's in here are sharp and will tell you the right answer.

removing and adding sections to steam boiler

I am getting a new boiler for my old 1930 1 pipe gravity upfeed steam system but am a little unsure of the sizing requirements.
Hope this is not too ignorant a question, "Can the heating pro remove or add a section within a couple years of the installation if needed?
If so, it would simplfy my planning.
    Thanks,
    JK

it can be done, but zowie, what alot of work. Better to size it right the first time. Get a good pro and have him size to the connected EDR (which is your radiators) You may want to go through and do a whole new heat loss and change some radiator sizes. Has the heat been pretty even? or is the house overheated in some areas. These are things you need to go over with whomever you chose to do the job. Get a couple of quotes and sit down with them and have them go over what they intend to do. You can always come back here and ask questions

steam boiler (open atmohspheric vapor system)

The furnace is less than ten years old. The pilot is on, water level is good, but it wont fire and produce heat. I tried to raise the psi level on the pressure regulation but nothing happened. Next, I tried to disconnect the wires from the thermostat wire and cross the two wires they were connected to. I was told that if the boiler does not engage than the thermostat or the wire coming from it are not the problem. When I did this I could see the electric damper lever turn and operate but the furnace still did not fire. Wondering what I should look at next.

    Confused,

    boiler not working

hey Jerry it sounds like your end switch in your damper motor is not working, when the unit calls for heat and the damper opens there is a override switch on the damper that you can trigger and it will hold damper in the open position on overide.

Thanx for the help guys. Upon further investigation it turns out the saftey switich which shuts down the furnace if it develops a rolling fire on the side was burned out BECAUSE my tenant tried to light that thinking it was the pilot.

    No longer confused. Just annoyed.

    Thanx again
