Need help in identifying this radiant system
Hello,
In order for me to know which of Dan's books I need to buy to educate myself, I first need help in identifying the type of radiant/steam system that I have.
The system now is not working and hasn't worked in years. However, I do want to revive it someday but need to know with what I am dealing. I think it is a hot water system, but I just don't know for sure. I have attached some photos so you all can see what I have.
inlet.jpg shows the pipe going into the radiator.
outlet.jpg shows the pipe coming out of the radiator.
pipes.jpg shows the size of the pipes going to the radiators.
bleeder.jpg shows what I think is the bleeder thing.
boiler.jpg shows the old, rusty boiler...notice the pipes going to it...they are huge.
I look forward to your identifications.
Thanks,
David0 -
I'll make a fellow homeowner guess...
... a coal-fired boiler that used to heat a gravity-flow hot water system?
That boiler will be a lot of fun to remove, if that's what it comes to. My back hurts just looking at it!
Given where oil and gas prices are going, perhaps a return to coal could be considered? ;-P0 -

I'll think about that PITA tomorrow :-o.
Gravity-flow system....which of the books then in Dan's list would be the most beneficial to me in terms of reviving the system?
No one...I mean NO ONE in the town I am located can help me. I will have to get a new boiler and such and installer probably from a city about 50 miles from here.
I just don't want whomever I get to install and "calibrate" to screw me over, so to speak.0 -
Looks like
It's in between Swampy and me, with Swampy being closer...
(Brian (Swampy) Wood is in Lake Charles, Louisania and I'm slightly northwest of Atlanta...)
My suggestion is to buy Dan's books, primarily 'The Lost Art of Steam Heating," "We Got Steam Heat!," and "Linhardt's Field Guide to Steam Heating" to keep the knuckleheads away.
Vicksburg. Wow.
