Updating boiler

make sure the boiler is in good shape. I wouldn't invest that kind of money for so little gain. Better to spend on insulation.

    Updating boiler pilot

My wife and I just bought a house with a natural gas-heated steam system. The house was built in 1936 and is still in need of some updating to make the house more heat efficient (some old windows, walls not insulated). Regarding the heating system, is it possible to install an electric pilot (similar to a dryer) to ignite the gas when the boiler kicks on, rather than having the gas pilot lit and burning gas continuously?
The projected annual natural gas budget for this house is over $200 and we're looking for ways to improve efficiency and eliminate wasted gas.

    Yes....

It can be done with the changing of the gas valve, pilot burner, and the addition of an ignition module for spark to pilot. It will probably cost $400.00 to $600.00 depending on the components and work needed to make it run in accordence of local codes.........

am assuming you meant 2,000 and not 200

I agree with Joe, you will never recover your investment. Put the money first to insulation, that is your best rate of return. If the boiler is better then twnety years, it really isn't worth putting much money in it except to keep it running.
